With the comprehensive overhaul of this WOTAN CUTMAX 2, a high-performance horizontal boring and milling machine was restored to an excellent technical and geometric condition. The objective of the project was to recover the machine's original precision while ensuring reliable and cost-effective operation over the long term. The scope of work also included the complete reinstallation and commissioning of the machine at the customer's site.
The project began with the complete disassembly of the machine down to its main structural assemblies. Following thorough cleaning, all components were carefully inspected and evaluated for wear and functionality. Worn or defective parts were either repaired or replaced before the machine was reassembled.
A key focus of the project was the machine's geometric restoration. To ensure long-term machining accuracy, the Z-axis guideways were precision-ground, the cross slide was hand-scraped, and the worktable was surface-ground to restore flatness and parallelism before also being hand-scraped. These measures form the basis for the exceptional precision of a horizontal boring and milling machine and ensure accurate positioning throughout the entire working envelope.
The refurbishment included, among others, the following work:
- Precision grinding of the X- and Z-axis guideways
- Precision grinding of the intermediate table and upper table
- Realignment of the spindle head and tailstock center height
- Replacement of the X- and Z-axis ball screws
- Replacement of the complete machine wiring
- Replacement of all hydraulic hoses and piping
- Installation of new bellows covers
- Replacement of worn components following technical inspection
- Complete reassembly of the machine
- Repainting with a high-quality two-component coating system in RAL 7035 (Light Grey) and RAL 5007 (Brilliant Blue)
At the customer's request, a new transformer was supplied and installed, the main spindle motor was fitted with new bearings, and the main gearbox was inspected.
Another key part of the project was the complete installation, alignment, and commissioning of the machine at the customer's facility. After the machine bed had been positioned on the prepared foundation, it was precisely levelled and geometrically aligned. All machine components were then reassembled, and the electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems were connected. Following final geometric adjustment, the machine was successfully commissioned and handed over to the customer.
The scope of the installation and commissioning included:
- Positioning and levelling of the machine bed on the foundation
- Geometric alignment after grouting and anchor bolting
- Reassembly of all machine components
- Connection of the electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
- Completion of the machine enclosure
- Complete commissioning
- Final geometric adjustment
- Operator training covering machine operation, maintenance, and servicing
Upon successful completion of the project, the customer received a WOTAN CUTMAX 2 restored to a high level of precision and performance. Thanks to the geometric restoration, the overhaul of key machine assemblies, and the professional installation and commissioning, the machine once again meets the highest standards of accuracy, reliability, and cost-effective operation.
