High-Precision Machine Tools

A machining center is a numerically controlled machine tool specifically designed to machine workpieces with complex, predominantly prismatic geometries in a single setup.

These machining centers are equipped with a tool interface that can be used for various machining processes such as milling and drilling. Due to their versatility and high precision, they are used in numerous
industry sectors and enable efficient, automated manufacturing. Tool changes are performed according to the specific operation via a tool magazine with an associated tool changer.

Their ability to perform various machining steps without reclamping significantly contributes to cost-effective production and makes them indispensable machines in modern metalworking companies.

Specific Applications Through Different Types

The machining center consists of various components, with the spindle being the core. This spindle rotates at high speed to drive the tool, reaching high five-figure speeds per minute depending on the application. When selecting spindles, a distinction is made between different types, each tailored to specific requirements:

1. Horizontal Machining Centers (HMC):
These machines are characterized by a horizontally oriented spindles. They are particularly suitable for machining cubic or prismatic workpieces. A characteristic feature is the integrated rotary table, which rotates the workpiece, thus enabling uninterrupted
machining of all surfaces in a single clamping operation.

2. Vertical Machining Centers (VMCs):
In these machines, the spindle is vertically oriented. They are ideally suited for machining flat or plate-shaped workpieces and are often found in pure 3-axis machining as well as in single-part and small-batch production. The easy accessibility of the work area facilitates tool changes and workpiece loading.

3. Universal Machining Centers:
These versatile machines combine both horizontal and vertical machining capabilities. They often feature a swiveling spindle or a rotating and tilting table, giving them exceptional flexibility. Such machining centers are ideal for complex 5-axis machining operations that require the production of demanding geometries.

Machining centers can also be classified by size, with a common criterion being the column cross travel (X-axis):
1. Compact machining centers: X-axis between 400–600 mm
2. Medium-sized machining centers: X-axis between 800–1500 mm
3. Large-format machining centers: X-axis from 1600 mm

Automation solutions

To further maximize productivity, modern machining centers are increasingly equipped with various automation solutions. These solutions can either be integrated directly at the factory or retrofitted:

1. Pallet change systems:
These systems enable the automatic exchange of workpiece pallets, ensuring uninterrupted production.

2. Robot-assisted loading and unloading:
Industrial robots are used to automate material feeding and removal. This not only reduces manual effort but also increases precision in the production process.

3. Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS):
In such systems, multiple machines work together under a central control system. They have extensive parts storage and allow for flexible adaptation to changing production requirements. Ideally, these systems are now networked with a central control computer that has access to order management and the tool pool and schedules orders according to their due date and the availability of the appropriate tools and clamping devices.

Why buy used machining centers?

In modern industry, machining centers are the backbone of precise and efficient production of complex workpieces. For industrial companies and large corporations in particular, choosing the right machine plays a crucial role in optimizing production processes and remaining competitive.

Used machining centers offer an attractive alternative to new machines, as they provide still high performance with reduced investment costs, often resulting in a competitive advantage.
