Project scope
Mechanical retrofit and electrical refurbishment
The modernization of this AXA VHC 3-XTS/50 presented our team with a unique challenge right from the start of the project. With an overall machine width of approximately four metres, it had to be transported by special haulage and then carefully moved through a workshop entrance only slightly wider than the machine itself. This operation required meticulous planning and execution with millimetre-level precision.
The condition of the machine also demanded a considerable amount of work. Heavy contamination made extensive cleaning essential, accounting for a significant portion of the overall project time. As the geometric inspection had already been carried out at the customer's site before the machine was transported, it was possible to identify at an early stage which assemblies required refurbishment to fully restore the machine geometry.
The complete dismantling of the machine proved to be particularly demanding. The tool shuttle, in particular, significantly increased the complexity of the work. However, due to the heavy contamination, complete disassembly was unavoidable. Only after the machine had been fully dismantled did the full extent of the required refurbishment become apparent.
As part of the modernization, the following components were renewed or refurbished, among others:
- Installation of new guide rails for the tool shuttle
- Replacement of the rotary table measuring system and clamping mechanism
- Replacement of all bellows covers and telescopic way covers
- Installation of new viewing windows
- Complete repainting with a high-quality two-component textured coating system
- Replacement of numerous cables, particularly those exposed to heavy wear or severe contamination

Upon completion of all work, the machine was restored to an excellent technical and visual condition, with an appearance and performance comparable to that of a new machine.
The direct before-and-after comparison clearly illustrates the extent of the modernization. What began as a heavily contaminated and worn machine tool has been transformed into a high-performance machining center that once again meets the demanding requirements of everyday production in terms of precision, reliability, and efficiency.
